NY Times: From Riches to Rags

//JW's Desknote: 'All the News That's Fit to Print,' was the mantra of one of the legendary media establishments in our country's history. The Fourth Estate of this country was the vehicle by which citizens oversaw the remaining estates: Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches. The NY Times led the way by providing hard hitting news stories, investigative journalism, and insightful news analysis. So what happened? From Jayson Blair to the most recent Iraq Weapons Cache story, the Times has simply become just another rag. A rag for the liberal left bent on providing misleading news stories with the intent of taking down President Bush. The most recent story hit the streets one week before the election, yet the story is almost two years old. NBC, also not Republican friendly, blasted the NY Times story by reporting that their embedded reporter during the initial phase of the Iraq war was with the troops who came upon the ammo storage facility, and reported that there were no weapons to be found. This 380 tons of explosives seems to be have ferried out of the country prior to the invasion. Also not reported is the Pentagon's report that over a million tons of weapons and explosives have been destroyed. So, does the NY Times hit the front pages with a retraction? No, it leaves that story for the backpages. One has to look at CBS (Rather-gate), ABC (the Memo), and the NY Times with skepticism each time the page is turned or the news is broadcasted.
